Hadrian Albrecht was the fourth Viscount of Blackmarsh. He is often titled "the Redeemer" for his lifelong quest to restore honor to the Albrecht name. Considered a callous and calculating man, few can say that he was kind, but he was most certainly an effective viscount. He is most known for Hadrian's War, the War of Ebontide, and the Midday War.

AppearanceEdit

Hadrian favored his mother's features greatly. Although he was born with the same red hair as his ancestors, it was much more subdued in color and fell flat upon his fair skin. In his youth he was said to be known to smile, but following Hadrian's War never again did a smile find its way to his lips. He had a hard face and callous eyes, often favoring frowns.

While he never became a warrior, Hadrian was committed to maintaining physical fitness as a means of rebelling against his father's slovenly ways. He stood 6' and weighed around 185 lbs for the majority of his life. He kept his hair trimmed and was cleanshaven. With pale blue eyes and a stern nature about him, Hadrian did all that he could to stand in contrast to his father.

Although he never fought in battle, he often wore armor to meetings of his commanders. It was made of ornate steel and white gold, with a cloth-of-gold cloak cinched at the shoulder with a falcon pin.

HistoryEdit

It is said that had any other man been born in Hadrian's place, House Albrecht would have collapsed. As the son of Viscount Wilhelm, he was born into what many consider the lowest point in Albrecht history. With the house shamed publically and privately by his uncle Margrave Auric Falomyr and influence in Blackmarsh waning, the young man was given a land difficult to contend with.

During the Spring Campaign, Hadrian wished to prove himself by defending at the Blackwood Battle; however, his father was loathe to risk his heir in so dangerous a conflict. He instead was forced to watch as his bastard brother won acclaim in the remainder of the war.

Hadrian's mother, Claudia Buzan, could see the potential for strife between House Albrecht and the upstart bastards that her husband sired. To further strengthen her son's claim, she used what influence she had to procur a marriage for her son in the form of Duke Hightower's second born child and first born daughter, Mathilda Trueflame. With the marriage came a promise from the duke to assist his son-in-law in any military conflict that might endanger his daughter's life. This would not prove useful in Hadrian's War, but made all the difference in the Ebontide.

Though Hadrian greatly disliked his father, he was thankful for the man's obsession with the outside world. In his youth Hadrian was sent abroad to visit various kingdoms, where he met one of his lifelong friends Edmund Caradas of Stromgarde. In addition, he was able to learn of new and interesting techniques in both governance and generalship.

Following his ascension to viscount, Hadrian worked to diminish the lingering power of House Willow. He allowed his elder brother Burkhard to take command of the household, so long as he relinquished all claim to Albrecht lands. This created House Thorne, a military branch that would go on to serve in the Midday War. In addition, he wed his half-sister Dietlinde to Vann Creed , binding their houses and ensuring that the Creeds were loyal to his causes.

Hadrian relied on his first cousin, once removed, Geoffrey Albrecht , for a good deal of military advice in the earlier years of his leadership. After Sir Geoffrey was killed, he named his younger brother Anders to act as Falconheart. Anders' death at the Siege of Falomyr brought an end to Hadrian's War and also was the end of any happiness Hadrian knew.

He is considered the aggressor in the War of the Ebontide despite the fact Blackmarsh was attacked. Having learned from his past defeat, he crafted a wall of allies and comrades that ensnared the Falomyr forces when they attempted to attack Blackmarsh. The victory greatly restored faith in House Albrecht's ability to rule.

Perhaps his greatest act in the eyes of many was healing the schism between two of Blackmarsh's oldest houses. At Mathilda's suggestion he asked Lord Vance Pendleton to allow his daughter to marry his eldest son. This would be the second marriage between the houses, but the first to place such a strong connection between the authority of the houses.

Five years before the First War he passed away, leaving control of Blackmarsh to his son Magnus.

LegacyEdit

Hadrian was considered a frugal leader, though his wartime spending exceeded that of his father. He was most concerned with strengthening Blackmarsh's economic and military abilities, which led to bringing in outside investors. Blackmarsh's chief export was wood prior to his decision, but after became finished products.

Hadrian created the first contract between lord and subject in Blackmarsh, largely basing it upon Lordaeron's perceived civility. He also abolished the practice of superstitions and instated the Light as the official religion in Blackmarsh. Though a war was to result, he crushed his opponents before they could gather the strength.

After years of conquest and with the money gained from the War of the Ebontide, he set to rebuilding many of the lands impoverished by past civil wars. Under his hand, many old wounds were allowed to heal and new ones were kept from becoming too severe.

If not for his actions, many doubt Blackmarsh would have been prepared for the Second War. Despite the fact he never served in war, a statue of him stands in the middle of Blackwatch Keep in which he is dressed for battle with a golden cape strewn across his shoulders.
